Coffee Tour Dispatch #2 Cupping Ethiopia Coffees

Blog Post 14 November 2009

First up, this is going to be a short post. Its late here in Ethiopia and we have a bleary eyed start on the road to coffee farms tomorrow. Here is a little glimpse into 'cupping coffee' - as it happens in the Oromia Coffee Farmers Union every day during their harvest season (Nov - Feb). In the attached video post you will see Tilahun Mekonen, Oromia's licensed Q-Graded Cupper showing us some of last years coffees (Sadly, we are too early to experience the beautifully fresh coffees that are being picked and processed as I write this!).

The coffees have been roasted, ground and prepared for our sampling delight. Cupping coffees is always a hazardous experience for the beginner - likelihood is you will choke in your first few sessions while you learn to vaporize the coffee liquor across the roof of your mouth.

We really enjoyed this session with Tilahun, and as you will see, Tadesse Meskela - the famed front man of BLACK GOLD. We are in the privileged position of having Tadesse take us around the coffee cooperatives of the Sidamo region - coffees we are cupping in the video post. This is not really a technical cupping video, and more about the people in it - which is what we are all about at Peoples Coffee. Enjoy!
